After college, I moved to LA. The city of dreams. And right away, I got, what appeared to be, my dream job and things were on course. I was touring with a huge group. I was at the heart of the entertainment industry. Everyday a different city, living on a tour bus. Putting together concerts worldwide for, literally, millions of people. Seeing the world. Totally in it.
But have you actually thought about what that would be like?
a DIFFERENT city EVERY day? LIVING on a tour BUS? Here’s a secret, you don't see much more than that bus...or the airport...or the venue those millions of people come and trash. I've spent the last two year as a pirate, as they say in the bizz. I worked with the crew, one of 2 girls for the majority of my year. Don't worry, the other girl had a huge, giant, hairy-man-boyfriend on tour, so it was mostly me and 80-100+ burly tattooed roadmen.
Men with stories we read about in Rolling Stones, of being coked out for days in the 80s, men with no real skin showing-just ink, men who have built entire lives out of suitcases.
My first day of work I came bouncing in, thinking I was coming for a job interview I might mention...there are no job interviews. you can either do it, or you cant, and it’s obvious real quick. Anyway, bouncing in wearing an adorable little dress. Hair down. Trying to make a good impression in a world I knew nothing about
"Oh, you must be new."
"How'd you know?"
"You look like a girl. I give it a month."
"Give what a month?"
"You. Either you'll quit, or you'll start dressing like the rest of us"
...
I pretty much wore jeans and a t-shirt everyday from there on out.
In my defense, work days were 20 hours long. Then we'd leave, get on a bus, sleep 3-4 hours, then do it again...4 or 5 days a week. All while deflecting come-ons from men my father's age. Seriously, who has time for dresses*?
*Though I will say, I tried to wear something more presentable and maybe even attempt make-up any day after a day off. More or less to prove a point. Girls can still be girls and while they work with boys...at least about a third of the time...
